Recently I received emails from two Portland Architecture readers with ideas that I'd like to pass on. The result was an approach to the built environment that lent itself to public relations and propaganda—it played well in manifestos and glossy architecture magazines—but was less functional, less adaptive, and less human and engaging. The modernist architectural pioneers made up wild explanations for why the new designs and materials were supposedly superior, practically and ethically, and were rewarded with commissions, fame, and academic positions. Green Void: an absence of ethical architecture. The project was inspired, in part, by one of Otero-Pailos's heroes, John Ruskin, the British art and architecture theorist whose prodigious literary output included a book called The Ethics of the Dust (Otero-Pailos omitted the second “the”), originally published in 1865. The first comes from a former Portland-based architect now working in Seattle. Title, The Research on Ethical Function of Architecture. In a sense his work in Bolzano and later in Venice is asking us to acknowledge pollution's place in our lives and recognize our role in producing it. He says: “Emotion is the authentic core of objects”, that our memories are related to emotions & that to produce a good design we must understand the ethical function of architecture. Thus, your character is determined and defined by your intentions and the extent to which you guide all your actions by these ethical principles while your reputation is purely a function of perceptions. The resulting publication is an attempt to unpack the ethical and metaphysical implications of engaging non-human and environmental factors in design. Green Void by Laboratory for The object displayed is obviously not architecture: it is not intended to provide shelter or any other practical function, it is purely an aesthetic work.
